This group is the source for capital and physical planning at the University of Arkansas, and ensures that all projects support the academic goals of the University and promote the highest physical potential of the Fayetteville campus.

	August 2018 \| Bike Share Program Comes to U of A in Partnership With Fayetteville - The U of A and city of Fayetteville have partnered with VeoRide for the region's first mobile app-based bicycle-sharing program. They hope to bring 290 different bikes to the program. Fifty of those bikes would be electric making Fayetteville the first city in the state to offer electric bikes from a bike-sharing program. “The city of Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas have done something really special here,” said Chancellor Joe Steinmetz. “We are launching a system that will serve university students, faculty and staff, as well as the residents and visitors in the community. This is a program that can truly benefit everyone.” VeoRide works through a mobile app, similar to ride-share programs such as Uber. It will allow users to locate, reserve and unlock available bikes at designated areas throughout the city. Riders must provide their own helmets. The bike-share program is planned to launch in September. More details about the program will be announced later. > full article July 2018 \| Library Storage Facility Now in Use - University Libraries’ new high-density storage facility is now in use, increasing capacity for the university’s growing library collection of books and other materials. The building also helps free up needed space at the main library. The 27,000-foot, climate-controlled storage facility will hold approximately 1.8 million volumes when filled to capacity. The facility will also include a digitization and work space area, as well as an area for maps and microforms. The transfer of low-demand books and other materials started last month and is scheduled to be completed in September. The new facility will house the majority of the Libraries’ print collections while Mullins Library will be renovated to meet the needs of today’s growing and technology-driven campus community. > full article July 2018 \| U of A is Creating Natural Trails on the Oak Ridge Hillside - University of Arkansas is creating nearly a mile of natural-surface trails within the Oak Ridge hillside. This new pocket park in the campus core is supported by a Walton Family Foundation grant. The Oak Ridge is a 3.5-acre wooded hillside between the Sam M. Walton College of Business and Clinton Street. The hillside is home to a scenic multi-use paved path with eroded foot trails crisscrossing the landscape. Those informal trails are soon to be reclaimed and replaced with a sustainable trail system that will enhance the safety and aesthetics of the Oak Ridge. The updated system of paths will include decomposed granite trails, singletrack trails, gateway trails, treated wood steps, and flagstone trailheads. Each natural surface will provide a unique experience while fulfilling the design considerations of that area. The completed product will be durable, scenic, low impact and fun for users. > full article May 2018 \| Health Center Opens New Addition; Women's Clinic, Wellness Celebrate New Space - May 4 was a momentous day for Pat Walker Health Center and the University of Arkansas campus. After many months of planning and construction, the health center celebrated the opening of its new, state-of-the-art, 20,000-square-foot addition. This new space, which is now accessible to the campus community, enhances an already diverse and comprehensive health and wellness center, and increases the number of students the health center can impact. The added space also gives the health center the ability to offer students more broad and comprehensive services and programs designed to help them stay healthy and achieve academic and personal success. The completed addition now paves the way for the final phase of the project — renovating the existing facility for mental health. Expected to be complete by September of this year, the renovated second floor will nearly double the amount of space for Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS). > full article February 2018 \| University libraries bring first cross-laminated timber panel to state - The first cross-laminated timber panel in the state of Arkansas was installed on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the future library storage facility site off Government Avenue in Fayetteville, owned by the University of Arkansas Libraries. Cross-laminated timber panels are made of timber planks that are stacked, glued and laminated in perpendicular layers under heavy pressure. The panels are pre-fabricated and then shipped to the site, reducing construction time and waste. Cross-laminated timber is environmentally friendly, lighter and thinner than steel and concrete, but equally strong and safe. > full article > more January 2018 \| Vol Walker Hall & the Steven L. Anderson Design Center wins 2018 AIA Institute Honor Award for Architecture - The Vol Walker Hall & the Steven L. Anderson Design Center project, home to the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, has been honored with the highest American award in architecture and design by the American Institute of Architects, which announced its 2018 Institute Honor Awards and will be presented during the annual AIA Convention and Expo in New York City. Dedicated in September 2013, the Steven L. Anderson Design Center is a contemporary 37,000-square-foot addition to the renovated historic Vol Walker Hall. Marlon Blackwell Architects was lead architect for the project, with Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects as associate architect. Baldwin and Shell was the contractor. The expanded Fay Jones School facility unites all three departments – architecture, landscape architecture and interior design – under one roof for the first time, reinforcing the school’s identity and creating a cross-disciplinary, collaborative learning environment. The integration of old and new revitalized the educational environment of Vol Walker Hall, the campus’ original library and home to the Fay Jones School since 1968. The addition resonates with the traditional structure of Vol Walker Hall while providing an identity as a progressive design school. The Indiana limestone cladding and steel windows of Vol Walker Hall, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, were meticulously restored, while the interior renovation established a middle ground between minimalism and classicism.
